They Made a Difference in the 70′s

November 3rd, 2011

There were several musicians who started in the late 60′s that needed a new and highly energized sound to make it in the 70′s. The music scene was evolving and intensity was the name of the game. The already famous Mitch Ryder from Detroit had several great hits including “Devil with the Blue Dress” and “CC Rider” from the 60′s, was in need of a new group to continue his career. Lou Reed who started with the “Velvet Underground” had incredible lyrics, but needed a more intense sound to really get his music to the legend level. Alice Cooper who went solo with a different and very theatrical act would need a healthy dose of energy to kick off his 4 decade career.

Well, along come a pair of guitar players, Dick Wagoner and Steve Hunter, who would light the Rock world afire. Their incredible guitar harmonies and sheer raw power would provide the background for many albums and even more live concert tours. They would back up other greats including Meatloaf, Peter Gabriel and who would guess even Aerosmith! Their live performances would (in my opinion) equal that of the artists they would propel to greatness.Though I don’t usually include more than 2 videos in this blog, I’m going to insert 3 this time. There is so much materiel to share. I had the chance to speak with Mitch Ryder recently after a show in Kokomo, Indiana. His comment on Hunter and Wagoner was” those two were dangerous”. I’m of the opinion that those two were a great part of creating Rock&Roll history. http://www.noblesavageproductions.com/rock_n_roll_animals.php follow this link to really get the entire story of these two musical greats. Please listen and enjoy. Be safe and have fun. Jim Dance

Female Rockers in the 70′s

October 30th, 2011

Suffering from a 60′s Rock&roll hangover, I thought I would write a few words about some 70′s female rockers who may have been under rated, under played, and surely under exposed. In the past (before the 70′s) there were many great female vocalists and singing groups, too many to list in fact. But, in the 70′s an all female group called “Fanny” hit the music scene. The group was made up of sisters June and Jean Millington (Bass and lead Guitar),Nickey Barclay(keyboards), and Alice deBuhr (percussion). Later as members came and went the sisters added other musicians to fill the gap. The girls were the first to actually play their own music and did so with great skill and feeling. I never heard them live, but I sure wish I had. June and Jean had grown up together playing and honing their unique musical skills. Nickey Barclay’s keyboard work is just flat-out inspiring. The group also did covers of music from the Beatles and several Mo-town tunes. Check out Fanny, I’m sure you will be pleased. I’ll write more about great female rockers later. Be safe and have fun. Jim Dance

Fuel Prices and the Establishment

October 27th, 2011

Well once again I’m excited about people, energy companies and most regulatory agencies. First of all there are those out there who insist that we, the American public, have it so much easier than European counterparts. After all we only pay $3.75 (USD) for a gallon of gas and in Europe they are paying almost twice that amount. Well let’s take a closer look…… most countries in Europe are small sized compared to many US states. Europe has extensive rail networks between cities and countries. If no rail is available buses fill in the gaps. Here in the us Cities are much further apart and much more of the population lives is areas where there is no public transportation. We need to drive more….. much more!
As has been explained many times by “experts”, the cost of fuel in particular and energy in general is a pipeline type of price index. Today’s price goes into the pipeline and the end users price comes out the other end. So the $50 a barrel oil comes out after all the $75 a barrel is through the system. Ok, this makes sense and anyone can see how fluctuations occur. What nobody can explain is how it can take weeks for the lower prices to flow through the system and one day for the higher prices to appear on the market. So it’s not funny that electricity and natural gas follow the pipeline theory, but gasoline and diesel fuel seem to be opposite. Why is diesel fuel so much higher than even hi-octane gas? Is it because America “runs on diesel”? Supply and demand are one  thing, but, is the price of America’s life blood being manipulated? It seems to me the foxes are watching the hen-house. Where is the common sense?  The free market would bring lower prices if regulators used more common sense and less “feel good” theories. If regulation was at a level that would allow companies to provide the supply, then consumer prices would drop. The United States is a country that runs on gas and diesel fuel. Our size dictates that goods and people must be on the move. Will somebody stand-up and get this train back on the track?! Oh well, I’ve vented. Thanks for reading my blog. Be safe and have fun. Union Bashing

October 19th, 2011

Well I’ve finally had it with all the “talking heads” in the media bashing unions and their members. Even the print media is getting their licks in with article after article being written about the “evils of unionism. Now, let it be said there are abuses, and seemingly outrageous clauses in some union contracts. All you hear about are high retirements and seemingly endless benefits for the bulk of retirees. You hear about strict  job classifactions, low productivity, do nothing job positions. Most of all this was indeed true……. 30 years ago. What you don’t hear about are the people involved on the management side who agreed  to and signed these relics of labor relations. I would venture to say management never agreed to a contract that would knowingly lose the company money. Their jobs were to make profit for the company and stockholders.  In todays environmentt,  union and management work together to meet those ends while securing  jobs for a well trained, skilled and productive work force. In an effort to increase profits companies have shifted production overseas or,  to nonunion areas of the country. Many overseas factories were build on the profit earned by hardworking and dedicated union members. For their labors workers were rewarded with closed factories here in the US and massive layoffs.  I would further venture to say that most of the “experts” who demonize unions have never spent a day or more working in an environment where production output is the priority and to make that happen takes hard physical labor and a lot of sweat. Oh, a worker also need to be able to think too. The days of the “factory drone” are gone. The opportunity to move forward with high employment and good paying jobs is  ahead of us. Remember unions really did build this country and they should be a part of rebuilding it. Be safe and have fun.  Jim Dance UAW Journeyman Industrial Electrician

Getting Ready for Winter

September 27th, 2011

>> With Autumn upon us Winter is fast approaching. So, here are a few tips to help you get ready for cold weather and snow. I personally head to Arizona for the Winter where I can see snow and not suffer in the cold. I run down a check list of things to prepare the home-place for the upcoming bad weather and insure there are no problems when I return in the Spring.
Many people ignore their lawn care in the Fall. Before the first frost, broad-leaf weed control and fertilizer need to be applied. If you are not the DYI type call a professional. They know how to insure you have a beautiful lawn in the spring and you will love the results. Another thing to do for a better lawn is to remove the fallen leaves and debris. Not doing so will give yellow and possibly dead spots in the Spring.
Several more tips include covering the outside water faucets. Any hardware or home improvement store will carry the items. A good rule to follow is “spend a little save a lot”. Broken pipes are expensive to repair. Lastly, after the leaves have fallen clean the gutters. Not only is it less messy to clean before the leaves start to rot, but poor gutter drainage can lead to ice buildup and water damage. So prepare for Winter. You will not have to worry about those little things that can cause big problems. Be safe and have fun. Jim Dance

Fall Road Trips

September 19th, 2011

Fall is a wonderful time of the year to just take a ride. Whether it’s in a car or even on a motorcycle the sights and smells of Autumn make for memorable moment for the family or just good friends. The first thing to take into consideration is peak folliage timing. Of course the farther north the sooner the leaves begin to show their true colors and farther south fall comes much later. When I lived in New York, our  Sunday drive was the first weekend in October. We would load up the car with a  picnic basket and a cooler of cold drinks. Typically we would head up route 22 from Brewster, NY. and travel up through New York State enjoying the landmarks and foliage. Route 9 took us East into Bennington, Vermont and we would head South on Route 7  through Massachusetts, Connecticut and back to Brewster. It was a wonderful trip with great family fun.
Here in Indiana, the famous Brown County has some of the best fall scenery in the Midwest. Southern Indiana in general has many wonderful roads to travel and Nashville, Indiana is a unique shoppers dream. Brown County seems to have it all. There are Orchards with hayrides and cider. Several wineries with tasting available. There are resturants and antique shops galore. So, wherever you “Road Trip” this enjoy the sight sounds and smell of Autumn. Make memories, be safe and have fun. Jim Dance

Fall Festivals

September 1st, 2011

With the end of summer upon us it’s time to enjoy all the Fall festivals. For many years it has been a tradition to celebrate the summers end and upcoming harvest season with festivals. Almost every Midwest county and even several communities within them hold these great family affairs. There is always something for everyone in the family to enjoy. Of course the food at these gatherings resembles that of the summers county fairs, but here’s your chance to get one last “food fix” before winter. Many folks enjoy chlli suppers and fish frys also held. For the early riser don’t forget the great pancake breakfasts to start the weekend. In my humble opinion it’s almost impossible to walk around the food court and not eat something!
There so many other activities too. The local garage sales are an antique hunters dream. Besides any bargins one may find, don’t forget the old addage “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure”. Festivals all have vendors with too many products to name. There are games for the kids and skill games for adults. For car lovers there are cruise-ins or car shows. Don’t forget concerts or Sunday Church services.
So, if you’re here in the Midwest or just passing thru, stop by a Festival. Enjoy all there is available for the family. Maybe you can take home a memory!! Be safe and have fun. Jim Dance
